Tablecloth Size Chart: How to Choose the Perfect Tablecloth for Any Table

Posted by The Ichcha Team on 5th Feb 2025

Tablecloths are the foundation of your tablescape, so you want to ensure you get the right size. Whether you’re hosting a wedding dinner or a casual house party, knowing how to measure tablecloths is key to achieving an aesthetically pleasing table setting. Ichcha offers a wide range of block print tablecloths for various table sizes. With this tablecloth size chart and some simple tips below, you’ll be able to choose the ideal tablecloth for any dining table you’re decorating.

Let’s dive right in!

How Are Tablecloths Measured?

Step 1: Measure the Tabletop

To find the correct tablecloth size, start by measuring the table’s length and width (or diameter for round tables). For oval tables, measure the length and width as you would a rectangular table.

Step 2: Determine the Ideal Drop

The tablecloth drop is how much of the fabric hangs over the edges of your table. For casual dining, a 6–12” drop works perfectly. For special occasions like weddings and formal events, the industry standard is to drape the entire table height—i.e. 30” drop—or 15" drop for half-length.

Step 3: Calculate the Tablecloth Size

Use these formulas to determine the tablecloth dimensions you need:

For Rectangular Tables:

  • Table Length + (Drop × 2) = Tablecloth Length
  • Table Width + (Drop × 2) = Tablecloth Width

For Round Tables: Table Diameter + (Drop × 2) = Round Tablecloth Size

Note that a square tablecloth can also work beautifully for a round table. The same formula applies.

For Oval Tables:

  • Table Length + (Drop × 2) = Tablecloth Length
  • Table Width + (Drop × 2) = Tablecloth Width

Example

Assuming you have a 6-ft table measuring 30 inches x 72 inches.

Table length = 72”

Table width = 30”

Desired drop = 15”

Tablecloth length = 72” + (15 × 2) = 102”

Tablecloth width = 30” + (15 × 2) = 60”

A 6-foot table measuring 30" x 72” will require a 60” x 102” rectangular tablecloth for a half-length drop.

Note: Most tables are 28-30 inches high. Hence, half-length means a 15" drop, while floor-length is a 30" drop that touches the floor.

When in doubt or if you can't find the exact tablecloth size for your table, it's always best to go for a larger tablecloth rather than a smaller one.

Drop Length is Key

The most important factor when measuring the tablecloth size is knowing your ideal drop length. How much overhang looks nice and comfortable to you? For everyday dining at home, you really don’t need the tablecloth to drop all the way to the floor. A 6-12 inches drop is convenient as it gives enough leg room.

You don't want to exceed the 15" drop for everyday dining and social gatherings. The only time a floor-length drop is recommended is for wedding parties and other formal events. Of course, there's no denying that longer drops can instantly elevate any table setting to look more refined and lavish. For round cocktail tables, always go for floor-length drops.

After measuring your tabletop, use your ideal drop length to calculate the correct tablecloth size to buy.

How much bigger should a tablecloth be than a table?

To calculate tablecloth size, use this formula: Table length + (drop x 2) = Tablecloth length; Table width + (drop x 2) = Tablecloth width. For round tables, table diameter + (drop x 2) = Tablecloth size.

What is the best fabric for tablecloths?

Cotton is the best fabric for tablecloths for casual events and everyday dining as it's less expensive, while linen is preferred for more formal settings. We don't recommend polyester and spandex table linens as these synthetic materials cause harm to the environment.
